First published in 1911 and translated into English in 1916, this book was Jung's first writings on myths, legends, and fairy tales and their relation to psychopathology.

Jung explained the psyche in terms of three systems that interact with each other: the conscious, the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious.

PSYCHOLOGY OF THE UNCONSCIOUS has been recognized as the first "Jungian" book, in which he first defined libido as general psychic energy manifested in symbols. Vincent Brome wrote that it "developed his reputation as an original thinker in psychoanalysis ... for the first time it converted the term 'psychoanalysis' into "analytic psychology."
