The English Malady by George Cheyne

George Cheyne: THE ENGLISH MALADY: OR, A TREATISE OF NERVOUS DISEASES OF ALL KINDS (1733)

Cheyne correlated "nervous disorders" with the stresses of life and environment of early eighteenth-century England. Like today, "the tensions, the tempo, the wear and tear of 'modern' living were responsible for an apparently increased incidents of nervous and emotional disorders." (Modern Medicine, January 18, 1965).

The "malady" refers to range of ailments from crankiness from an overloaded stomach, to lowness of spirits, the spleen, vapours, melancholy, hysteria, hypochondria, and actual insanity.

Cheyne identifies the causes of the malady as the mutability of the weather, sedentary life-styles, crowding, and pollution. His cures: fresh air, exercise, and a light diet consisting of dairy and vegetable.
