Idiocy: And Its Treatment ... by Edward SeguinEdward Seguin: IDIOCY: AND ITS TREATMENT BY THE PHYSIOLOGICAL METHOD (1866)
Seguin was "the first to outline a complete plan for the training of mental defectives," according to Garrison and Morton.
A disciple of Jean-MarcGaspard Itard who made failed attempts to train developmentally disadvantaged youngsters in the early 19th Century, Seguin achieved success with work in the area from 1837 to 1848.
After the Parisian psychiatrist relocated to America in 1848, Seguin's methods emphasizing compassion for and understanding of idiocy were taken up all over the country. Seguin was determined not to wait on a cure for idiocy, but to insure an education for idiotic children.
