John Hunter: THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE HUMAN TEETH
John Hunter, the father of experimental surgery and the leading medical scientist of the eighteenth century, classified the teeth in a system still used today. He traced their development in the fetus and the child, and established their structure of pulp, bone, and enamel. Considered a classic in both the history of science and medicine, this work combines the first complete analysis of human dentition with exquisite illustrations making it a fine example of late eighteenth century English bookmaking.
Our facsimile edition of the very rare 1778 edition captures the charm and felicity of the original, particularly as regards the fidelity of reproduction of the sixteen exquisite engravings of Part I, which were drawn by Van Rymsdyk under Hunter's personal supervision.
G.V. Black: OPERATIVE DENTISTRY (2 vol.)
Generally regarded as the most important work in American Dentistry. Greene Vardiman Black's unselfish work of half a century forged in the chain of modern civilization a link- the link of scientific dentistry. While OPERATIVE DENTISTRY has been called Black's memorial, D. Henderson, B.D.S., F.D.S.R.C.S. Eng., stated "Black's greatest memorial is the practice of Operative Dentistry." The Classics of Dentistry offers a facsimile of the first edition of 1908, bound in genuine leather.
Joseph Fox: THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE HUMAN TEETH
Originally published in London in 1803, Joseph Fox improved on the landmark work of John Hunter, in many instances correcting, improving, and extending their researches. Fox corrected a error of his predecessors concerning the vascularity of the membranes surrounding the pulps.
Among the finest examples of making of early nineteenth century English bookmaking, this volume is enhanced by its elegant anatomical figures.
Joseph Fox: THE TREATMENT OF DIESASE OF THE TEETH, THE GUMS AND THE AVEOLAR PROCESS.
Continuing the research outlined in his first volume, THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE HUMAN TEETH, Joseph Fox describes the teeth under the influence of disease. Fox was a firm believer in the frequent existence of disease in the teeth arising from other than local causes; considering it frequently hereditary. In his researches the author examines carefully the nature of diseases of the gums, of the alveolar processes, and concludes with a description of the proper manner of performing operations of the teeth and upon the insertion of artificial teeth.
The Classics of Dentistry presents an exact facsimile of the original 1806 edition, This work is among the finest examples of making of early nineteenth century English bookmaking, this volume is enhanced by its elegant anatomical figures.
Emile Magitot: A TREATISE ON DENTAL CARRIES
J.F. Volker, D.D.S., Ph.D. states that Magitot was the Father of Experimental Dentistry, whose accomplishments rank with and possibly exceed G.V. Black and and W.D. Miller.
His greatest work "Treatise on Dental Caries", published in 1877 receives special commendation.
Magitot's anthropological background aided his recognition of dental carries with ethnology in France, noting the differences of those with Celtic vs. Cymric backgrounds, and the possibility that endemic caries might be attributed to certain waters.
The Classics of Dentistry presents an exact facsimile of the original 1877 first edition.
N.B De Chémant: A DISSERTATION ON ARTIFICIAL TEETH
In this era of modern dentistry, it is difficult to imagine the human misery that existed prior to the invention of artificial teeth. A landmark discovery that enabled the origination of the mineral denture belongs to dentist de Chémant.
De Chémant's careful record keeping of his experiments with these dentures was published in his classic A DISSERTATION ON ARTIFICIAL TEETH. First published in French in 1788, the Classics of Dentistry Library offers an exact facsimile of one of the earliest English editions of 1804.
